Physical Education (PE)

Why PE is important

We want Sheringham children to be young athletes so that they become strongly aware of the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle. Fostering an enjoyment of sport and exercise is vital at this age so that children establish healthy habits to take into adulthood. Experiencing a wide range of activities is important so that every child encounters enjoyable and rewarding pursuits.

Through games, children will develop their ability to communicate effectively within a team and work towards a common goal.

Sport provides an invaluable context for striving for excellence - encouraging children to be the best they can, engage in competition and learn to experience both success and failure gracefully: fundamental life lessons for children.

How our PE curriculum is designed

Our curriculum is informed by the National Curriculum and enhanced by subject expertise held within Sheringham and the Learning in Harmony Trust, as well as local opportunities and current events.

The PE curriculum is broken down into dance, gymnastics, games and athletics. Our sports specialist, Mr Owusu, works with every child once a week and teaches the games and athletics programme, with class teachers teaching dance and gymnastics weekly.

Pupils in Year 5 follow an intensive two week swimming course and Year 3 spend one week at the London Aquatics Centre at the Olympic Park.

Through the Newham Schools Sports Partnership, secondary school specialist coaches provide additional teaching and support across the school.

How children learn in PE

Sheringham young athletes will…

  • Learn new skills and apply them in matches, competitions and performances at the end of each unit.
  • Take part in sports competitions within the school, Trust and local community.
  • Respond to feedback and engage in peer-coaching to improve performance.
  • Swim in the Olympic pool
  • Try adventurous activities such as caving, canoeing and abseiling at Fairplay House
  • Be inspired about jobs and further opportunities within sport, by listening to a range of speakers from the sporting world.
