Music
Why music is important
We want Sheringham children to be musicians so that they can explore and appreciate the vivid, beautiful world of music and the escapism and sense of satisfaction it can offer.
In a world where we are increasingly busy and stressed out, it is important that we give our children the opportunity to develop interests that will allow them to manage their own wellbeing. Music allows children a creative outlet and experiences of pure enjoyment as they hone their skills, perform for the enjoyment of others and discover their own musical preferences to escape into.
The study of music develops transferable skills - motivation, independence, resilience, social skills - that will support learning across the curriculum and in later life
How our music curriculum is designed
Our curriculum is informed by the National Curriculum and enhanced by subject expertise held within Sheringham and the Learning in Harmony Trust, as well as local opportunities and current events.
Music is taught by our very own music specialist, Ms Lu. All children will participate in one session every week, during their teacher’s PPA time.
How children learn in music
Sheringham musicians will:
- Learn to perform in a Djembe drum circle, samba percussion band and choir.
- Learn the foundations of playing the keyboard, ukulele, glockenspiel and boomwhacker.
- Be inspired by performances by specialist musicians both in school and at events and concerts.
- Develop an appreciation for music from a range of cultures, including bhangra, reggae, hip hop, pop, classical, music theatre.
- Contribute to school performances, including our annual Music Day, school plays and seasonal celebrations.
- Explore the impact of technology on the world of music and begin to use current programs to support their learning.
